Distance Learning will continue for the remainder of the school year

Today, April 9th, Governor Wolf announced that Pennsylvania schools will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic year. 
A Message from Governor Tom Wolf - April 9, 2020

The Governor’s executive order means that the rest of the school year will not occur in a traditional school environment. Therefore, we will execute the online learning calendar for the remainder of the school year and participation is expected. This news is devastating and we understand how important it is for students to be in school. However, it is most important we keep our students, staff, and families safe and healthy, and so we support this difficult decision made by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

We understand the hardships that school closures have placed on our families, as well as the social and emotional impact it may have on our students. We also realize that this announcement raises a lot of questions for you. Our leadership team has been working together and will continue to do so, in order to address the many unanswered questions. We will continue to communicate changes and updates in the coming days.

Here’s what we know today:
School buildings will be closed. Learning will continue, but as you know looks different. Please remain tuned into your email and phone messages, as well as the AGCS website.

Students events. The most common questions we have received have been about students such as prom events, spring athletics, and graduation ceremonies. We recognize the importance of such events for our students and families, we will work to address all of your outstanding questions and concerns. The Governor’s order means that these traditions will not occur as normal. Our heart breaks that your students will not have the same traditions that they have been looking forward to. The Administration will work diligently in finding ways to celebrate the accomplishments of our students.

Meals for students will continue. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to students through the remainder of the school year.

Special Education and ESY. You can find the most recent Special Education plan here, which was updated on 4/6 and will be updated again on 4/17 as we gather more information over the next week on what this means for ESY. You should have been contacted by your child’s case manager directly with an
individualized plan for your child in alignment with his/her IEP and a consent to services electronic form that requires completion. If you have not received this, please contact Ryan Taylor, rtaylor@agcharter.org Due to the closure, we are unable to complete new evaluations that require assessments by our school psychologists so we kindly request that parents hold any new requests for evaluations until school resumes.

Technology. The IT Department will continue to provide maintenance of AGCS loaned devices as well as provide devices to those still in need. Any device related requests or issues are to be communicated to the teacher, family coach or through ticketing if the student is able to do so.

Our team will continue to provide you with updates as we work our way through what is truly uncharted territory. Please continue to remain engaged in order to receive critical information updates as soon as they are available. We know this is a time of great uncertainty, which can be especially trying on children who are used to the routine of the school year. Everyone involved – from state officials to our county health partners to the leaders within our school district – is working intently to do what is right and best for children and our community. We also want to thank our entire staff for their dedication and hard work during this challenging time. There are no easy decisions, only decisions that we believe are being made with the safety and health of our students in mind. We pledge to continue keeping you informed as decisions are made that impact you and your children. We are going to be flexible and ready to adapt.

Non-perishable Food Donations
If you are in a situation to donate, Avon Grove Charter School is accepting non-perishable items on Monday and Wednesday from 11:00 AM-12:00 PM. These items will be handed out to members in our community that come to the AGCS Grab & Go Meal Pick Up.

The AGCS Administration recognizes the difficulties for families to juggle the unknowns that COVID-19 has created in our day-to-day life, while also balancing working from home, managing childcare and supporting your child through a virtual setting. This is not an easy feat for anyone and we want to thank you for all that you are doing for your child.
